Materials & starting steps

Use a rigid mosaic-suitable board, compatible adhesive and grout, and ceramic or glass pieces of similar thickness. Prepare your board following the product instructions.

  1. Transfer the outline and choose your colours.
  2. Dry-lay the main shapes, then fill the background. Leave joints suitable for your grout.
  3. Glue in sections, allow to cure, then grout and clean as directed by the manufacturers.

Wear eye protection when nipping tiles. Handle sharp pieces carefully and follow the grout label’s protection instructions. Start with an indoor decorative piece.

Dragonfly & Reeds · Indoor decorative project

Gather your materials.

Use pre-cut pieces for a simpler first project. Adapt narrow details to the pieces you have rather than trying to copy the inspiration image exactly.

Board and template

A rigid mosaic-suitable board large enough for the printed outline, the A4 template, a soft pencil or transfer paper, and masking tape. Prepare and seal the board as your adhesive manufacturer recommends.

Mosaic pieces

Glass or ceramic tesserae of similar thickness: blues for the wings, greens for the reeds and a pale background. Dry-lay your pieces before buying extra material.

Adhesive and grout

Choose mosaic adhesive compatible with both your board and pieces, plus grout suitable for your joint widths. Have a spreader, mixing container, sponge and soft cloth ready. Follow product instructions for quantities and curing times.

Work safely

Wear eye protection when cutting and use suitable mosaic nippers. Handle sharp edges carefully; keep fragments away from children and pets. Wear gloves for grouting and follow the grout label’s dust-protection instructions. Never wash grout into drains.

Make your dragonfly

Work at your own pace.

01

Print and transfer

Print the A4 PDF at actual size. Prepare your board, then transfer the outline using the pencil method below or transfer paper.

02

Arrange and attach

Dry-lay the dragonfly and reeds first, then the background. Leave even joints suitable for your grout. Glue small sections at a time and allow the adhesive to cure fully as directed.

03

Grout and finish

Test your grout choice on spare pieces first. Mix and apply as directed, working it into the joints. Clean excess at the recommended time without flooding the board. Allow to cure before displaying indoors.

Transfer it to your board

A simple pencil method

  1. Darken the outline. On the printed side of the template, draw firmly over every line with a soft pencil so the graphite is dark and prominent.
  2. Turn it face down. Place the pencilled side directly against your wooden board and secure the paper with masking tape so it cannot move.
  3. Scribble over the reverse. Using your pencil, scribble firmly back and forth on the back of the paper, following the areas where the outline sits underneath. This presses the graphite onto the wood.
  4. Check before removing. Carefully lift one corner to make sure the design has transferred, then strengthen any faint lines directly on the board.
  5. Adapt it if you wish. The border is optional—you can leave it untraced and arrange small border pieces freehand.

Please note: this method reverses the printed design. That does not affect this dragonfly, but it matters for words, numbers and directional designs.

Using another surface? Try graphite transfer paper on pale surfaces or white transfer paper on dark surfaces. Always test a small area first.
